Cancer Information Services Nurse


CONTRACT TYPE:  Part Time, 21 hours (3 days) per week Fixed Term Contract, to September 2015


Overall Responsibility

The Irish Cancer Society is the leading provider of information on all aspects of cancer. Through the Cancer Information Service, we aim to meet the information needs of people concerned about cancer, through providing comprehensive cancer support, advice and information to patients, carers, the general public and healthcare professionals.


The Irish Cancer Society’s Cancer Information Service

The Irish Cancer Society is focused on achieving four main goals over the lifetime of its strategy Towards a future without cancer 2013-2017. Two of the goals Reducing the Risk of Cancer and Improving Lives will be delivered by the Society’s Services department. Several strategic objectives are contained in each goal. For the goal Improving Lives, the Cancer Information Services (CIS) and Survivorship Programme is responsible for the delivery of the strategic targets.


The CIS includes the National Cancer Helpline (Freefone 1800 200 700), email information service, online and walk-in face-to-face service offered to anyone with concerns about any aspect of cancer This includes the Society’s Survivorship Programme which offers Peer Support and other programmes/ initiatives to support cancer survivors. The Society’s Daffodil Centres are part of Cancer Information Services and offer cancer information and support in the hospital setting. A close working relationship is paramount to ensure a consistent approach to the provision of cancer information and support.


An email information service and a walk-in face-to-face service are offered for anyone with concerns about any aspect of cancer. The Cancer Information Services team also provide interactive help online via Facebook and Twitter and an online message board for members of the public.

The CIS is accredited by Helpline Standard 2015 – 2017.

Main duties & Responsibilites

  • Respond to queries in a supportive timely manner ensuring caller dignity.
  • Answer calls in accordance with the operational guidelines / policies of the ICS.
  • Deal with queries received via email and on-line, “cancer chat” and meeting walk-in callers.
  • Present to various internal and external groups on aspects of cancer, from a health promotion perspective to treatments / side-effects, to follow-up care.
  • Make every effort to ensure that information given to callers, both verbal and written, is from reliable sources.
  • Forward information to callers, (e.g. leaflets, booklets, etc.) or ‘sign post’ them to relevant areas of the Irish Cancer Society or other relevant health care professional or organisation
  • Write and contribute to the Society literature and publications, which includes patient information booklets, factsheets and articles for the website. These will primarily be aimed at people concerned about or diagnosed with cancer.
  • Maintain confidentiality and anonymity as appropriate.
  • Maintain knowledge on developments in cancer care.
  • Maintain knowledge of resources/services for cancer patients throughout the country.
  • Communicate any new information to other members of Cancer Information Services team, adhering to policies in relation to the sharing of information and attending regular team meetings.
  • Keep informed regarding the Society’s campaigns and events, which may result in an increased number of calls on a specific issue.
  • Keep informed of activities and co-operate with other departments within the Society, (e.g. Support Groups, Fundraising and Communications).
  • Participate in Cancer Information Services quality assurance, which includes call evaluation and call monitoring.
  • Participate and contribute to the Society Journal Club and continuing education for nurses working within the Society.
  • Participate in clinical supervision.
  • Cooperate with individual performance review carried out within the Society.
  • Any other relevant duties that may be assigned by the manager.

Further information

  • Working on all areas of cancer and participating in different associated projects.
  • Managing the Society's exhibition stand at various workshops / conferences for both patients and health care professionals.
  • There are numerous resources in place to help deal with queries. As part of the extended Cancer Information Services team, there is an Information & Resource Officer whose role it is to source information for dealing with queries.
  • Relevant daily news articles are also available on-line each day to keep the team up to date.
  • Ongoing training and education is provided in the form of monthly support & debriefing sessions with an educational component, regular attendance at the Society Journal Club, and attendance at conferences / study days through-out the year.
  • Other Departments such as Health Promotion, Support Groups, Communications and Fundraising are all on-site and inter-departmental communication is a very important aspect of how the Society is run.



  • Registered General Nurse
  • Three years experience in oncology nursing
  • Cancer Nursing Qualification, e.g. Higher Diploma / Degree in Cancer Nursing
  • Computer literacy



Cancer Information Service is open from 9.00am to 7.00pm Monday to Thursday and from 9.00am to 5.00pm on Fridays. The Daffodil Centre is open from 9.00am to 5.00pm, Monday to Friday.



The hours of access to the Cancer Information Service are from 9.00am – 7.00pm Mon to Thurs, and 9.00am – 5.00pm on Fridays. Generally only 1 nurse is required to work until 7.00pm and the CIS nurses will therefore take it in turn to cover 5.00pm to 7.00pm.  Some weekend work is required and cover for holidays/absences in the Daffodil centre.
